HOW TO LOCATE PET URINE WITH A BLACKLIGHT August 15, 2011 08:00

One of the questions we get most frequently is “I’m not sure where my pet urinated.  How do I find where the smell is coming from?”  Oftentimes, the actual urine stain isn’t visible, so it can be difficult to pinpoint the source of the odor.  If you can’t locate the odor with your nose, a blacklight can be a very useful tool in helping identify urine.

Blacklights can be purchased online or in select pet stores.  Be sure to get a battery-operated blacklight for full portability.

The best way to locate pet urine under a blacklight is to wait until evening when it is dark.  Turn off all interior lighting.  Take the blacklight and hold it 1-2 inches above the carpet (or furniture, mattress, etc.).  Slowly sweep over the area with the blacklight to identify any light yellow stains.

Any stain that appears bright white is typically another substance such as a carpet cleaner or spilled drink.  The residue from these substances fluoresces brightly under a blacklight.  Urine fluoresces as a pale yellow color.

Once the stains are located–and confirmed by smelling the area in question–use Wee Cleaner to treat the area following instructions for the particular treatment area.

After treatment, the ingredients in Wee Cleaner may leave behind a residue that will fluoresce bright white.  This residue can be easily removed by vacuuming first and then gently rubbing the area with a wet washcloth.
